1729

North Carolina becomes a royal colony after King George II purchases territory from 7 proprietors. The purchase shifted control of private land ownership to property of the Crown.

1850

Gold is discovered in the Rogue River in Oregon. The discovery triggered local rushes, the founding of settlement towns, and violent conflicts with indigenous tribes.

1854

Walter Hunt receives the first patent for a paper shirt collar. The design was intended a disposable paper shirt collar designed to mimic expensive linen.

1866

Congress passes legislation authorizing the rank of General of the Army. Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant becomes the first to be promoted to this rank.

1868

The Wyoming Territory is established after President Andrew Johnson signed the Wyoming Organic Act. The act established new federal territory out of lands from the Dakota, Idaho, and Utah territories.

1871

Wilhelm Schneider receive a patent for the "Carousel."

1946

The Crossroads Baker device becomes the first underwater nuclear weapon test. The test was had dangerous radioactive water fallout and contaminated the surviving target fleet so severely that decontamination mostly failed.

1965

Bob Dylan performs with an electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival. The audience responded with mixed views, with some cheering and others booing. It was the first time Dylan performed music outside of his folk genre.

1969

President Richard Nixon declares the Nixon Doctrine, stating the U.S. would honor treaty commitments, provide economic and military aid, and offer a nuclear shield, but expected allies to provide their own ground troop manpower.

1983

The first non-human primate, a baboon, is conceived in a lab dish in San Antonio, Texas.

2010

WikiLeaks publishes classified documents about the War in Afghanistan. Over 91,000 classified U.S. military records were published in one of the largest leaks in U.S. military history.
